write with me

I’m passionate about the power and magic of words. Be it a big, juicy novel or tiny, punchy instagram caption - the way we craft words is still our strongest communication too. It’s how we get noticed and how we are remembered.

Perhaps your sales page needs a shake up or you want help with ad copy that goes beyond the obvious? Maybe you’re struggling to find your own voice and want a guiding hand to set you on your way? Perhaps you want to pen a love letter to put Romeo to shame! Whatever it is, I can help.

Think of me as your resident wordsmith - no matter the project, I can turn your word salad in to Michelin-starred degustation. It’s my party trick! That, and oversharing.

Send me an email with details of your project and let’s figure it out.

“Absolutely loved working with Hannah. So impressed by her ability to thoughtfully translate big ideas and complex subject matter into accessible, beautiful pieces of writing for AWWA. Importantly she imbues her writing with nuance, personal experience and kindness.”

what can I do?

More like, what can’t I do! Right?

  • I consider it a huge honour to create stories which bring other people happiness, entertainment or comfort. It’s a buzz and a privilege that never gets old! While I mostly focus on my own fiction writing I’m always open to collaboration on fiction, non-fiction and children’s books.

  • Need a personal essay to highlight your product, service or news piece? I am your person. I have worked with several companies to create essays which place brands at the centre of real, human stories.

  • Well, of course I love reading as well. My book reviews are regularly published in NZ media and sharing a love of books might just be my favourite things. I pride myself on thoughtful and sincere reviews that get noticed.

  • You can have all the best PR contacts but if your copy falls flat, so will your biz. I can collaborate on your brand copy, advertisements and social media to create an authentic, consistent and compelling voice.

  • I regularly write for print and online media on a wide range of topics from literature, to parenting, to body advocacy.

It all started when I was fourteen. I was going through a tough time because my best friend was very sick. My teacher, Ms Nasmyth, suggested I write a diary. I’m not sure she anticipated I’d still be at it decades later.

I never thought I could be a writer. Writing was a hobby. I wrote poetry, journal entries and long-winded travel emails... not "real" writing!

Then, in 2010, Pan MacMillan Australia offered to publish my debut novel: The Colour of Tea. I had written it while living in Macau, China and after I quit a big corporate job. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. Writing that book was my pet project, distraction and dream. I never imagined I’d see my book in print.

The Colour of Tea is about a woman finding her place in a foreign land and discovering hope amidst grief. It highlights the power of friendship and the perseverance of love. It was subsequently published by Scribner (U.S.), and went on to become a Canadian bestseller. It has been translated into several different languages including Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch and Bulgarian.

Since then I have published two more novels - Season of Salt and Honey (2015) and A French Wedding (2016) - as well as a picture book - Marjory and the Mouse. Recently, I co-created a kids history trail and activity book for my local neighbourhood. More manuscripts, stories and dreams are in the works!
