a bit about me

Words are my jam (and bread and butter - the whole sandwich)! But let’s step back in time…

I was a day-dreamy, curious, sensitive and happy kid. I read everywhere including in the bathtub. My parents had a monthly subscription to Reader's Digest and I obsessively checked the mailbox for it. Scholastic book fairs? Don't get me started. Anne Shirley, George Kirrin and Danny (World Champion) were my superheroes. If you know you know.

But I never thought I could be an author. That seemed as improbable as a phone you carry around in your pocket. Yeah right.

After highschool, I studied psychology and human resource management and became a corporate kind of gal. Working in human resources helped me see a fair chunk of the world. I lived in Melbourne, London and Macau, China. I travelled Europe in a van named Fred and dusted leeches off my sox in Thailand. I studied career coaching and added that string to my bow. I fell for a guy I worked with and he became my husband. Things were good! But I was dogged by a feeling I was supposed to be doing something else…

Finally, that nagging feeling turned into an upper cut to the head. While in Macau, working crazy hours in senior management, the wheels fell off my lovely life. I was burnt out and depleted. I knew things had to change and finally I quit my job. But who would I be now? What would fill the space in my life?

Words, of course. It has been over ten years since I ditched my old life and wrote my way into a new one. In that time I've published three novels, one picture book and a fam-friendly history trail. I've had three really great daughters. I've moved countries four times, run one half marathon (never again), written a food blog and started a podcast.

What's important to me these days is: my family, my dog (her name is Alma), being creative and being around creative people. I am an introvert but find humans dead-fascinating. I also like true crime podcasts. Thinking about the world I want my daughters to inherit informs my work a lot. I like to be in or near the sea and I drink a lot of tea.

I am an anxious optimist who loves a deep and meaningful overshare.

I love to dance.

I am a Cancerian with Gemini rising and Aries Moon.

My friend said to tell you that I am: "honest, nerdy, generous and a bit funny".

Obviously, I was miffed by the "a bit" part.

I’ve always been willing to overcome obstacles…

My little brother agrees that I am more than “a bit” funny.
